When you decide to take a long and expensive trip for the vacation you’ve always dreamed of, it’s very important to find the best option to make the experience truly unique and unforgettable—and to avoid disappointment. First of all, you need to think about the best season to choose, and this option must be carefully analyzed and evaluated, because choosing the wrong time of year could lead to disappointment.

If you prefer safaris, you need to carefully consider this factor because, depending on the season when you arrive in Zanzibar, you may or may not be able to see certain animals. You should also take the climate and temperatures into account, as the climate is tropical and temperatures are high year-round.

However, some seasons are much more bearable than others, and it is even possible that heavy rainfall may occur.

The best time to visit Zanzibar

Depending on what you prefer to do and the activities and experiences you want to enjoy, there are certain seasons to choose and others to avoid.

Since everyone’s needs are different, the best time of year isn’t always the best for everyone. That’s why it’s important to learn about the activities and figure out which time of year is best, so you don’t take unnecessary risks or end up disappointed.

Generally speaking, the largest influx of tourists occurs in August and during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.

As a result, costs are higher, since travelers choose this part of Tanzania for a vacation focused on relaxation (there are many spas and resorts) and entertainment (Tanzanian culture is rich in music and dance, for example).

During these peak season months, accommodations reach their highest occupancy rates, and prices for lodging, tours, and activities can rise significantly compared to other times of the year.

The driest and most pleasant time of

year
From a climate perspective, the best time to visit is from June through February, as these are the months when temperatures are mildest and there is little risk of rain. During this time, the sky is mostly clear and rain is rare, making this the ideal time for outdoor activities such as hiking in Stone Town, visiting historic sites, and scuba diving.

If your main goal is to enjoy stable and predictable weather, January and February are actually the best months to visit Zanzibar.

The Rainy Season and Its Opportunities

We’ll focus on the shorter rainy season because, depending on your preferences, it’s important to know whether to avoid it or choose it: the heavy rainy season runs from mid-March through June, and during this period it’s possible to organize some interesting safaris both in the Serengeti National Park and, especially, in the Ngorongoro Crater, where you can witness animals mating.

Despite the more frequent rains, this area offers a lush landscape and a very active wildlife population, which attracts the most adventurous travelers and those who wish to experience the true nature of Africa.

There is also another season—the light-rain season—which runs from mid-October to mid-December, and it’s the best time for those who don’t want to risk rain seven days a week (though there are, of course, exceptions). So, if you prefer cooler weather and want to enjoy activities by the sea, you might want to avoid this season—even though conditions are still very favorable for tourism during dry spells.

When not to go to Zanzibar: times to avoid

Knowing when not to come to Zanzibar is important, as is knowing the ideal times. If your main interest is spending entire days on the beach with the certainty of clear skies, you should avoid the rainy seasons.

The heavy rainy season (mid-March to June) brings heavy and prolonged rainfall that can limit beach activities and make some hikes difficult. Similarly, the light rainy season (from mid-October to mid-December), although less intense, can bring occasional rainy days that might interfere with your relaxation on the beach.

The best time to visit Zanzibar based on the climate

But when is the best time to go to Zanzibar based on the weather ? It all depends on your preferences, always assuming that temperatures in Zanzibar can’t rise above 20°C (68°F) because the climate is typically tropical and varies depending on the month and time of year.

The best time to visit Zanzibar without the risk of consecutive days of rain is during December, January, February, and March (the preferred months for those who enjoy high temperatures, around 30°C), and June, July, August, September, and October for those who prefer slightly cooler and more pleasant temperatures, hovering around 26°C. This second time frame is therefore an excellent option for those who want to avoid excessive heat while still enjoying generally favorable weather conditions.

Which Months to Avoid in Zanzibar

Since everyone has their own preferences and desires, we can’t say for certain that certain months should be avoided, because the periods that some people avoid are actually the ones that many others prefer, due to a number of factors: In fact, we can say that the off-season (which is also the least expensive) runs from September or October, with temperatures that never drop below 20° and a possible high of 30°.

However, it’s also worth noting that these months—though avoided by some—are the right choice and the perfect compromise for those who love relaxation and tranquility, allowing them to visit this beautiful place without spending too much. If you’re on a tight budget and want to avoid the tourist crowds, seriously consider this option: you might find great deals on lodging and tours during these off-season periods.

Furthermore, the rainy seasons are best avoided if you plan to spend a lot of time swimming in the ocean, if you prefer a sunny and warm island, and if you’re not interested in certain safaris, such as the Great Migration. In these cases, the best time to visit Zanzibar is undoubtedly during the dry, sunny season from June through October and from December through February.

When to go if you love the heat

If you prefer scorching temperatures , the best time is definitely February, with very high temperatures that can reach 33-34°C during the day. This time of year is the peak of the heat, so be prepared with light clothing and adequate sun protection.

Another hot period is December and January, when you may experience very muggy heat, especially during the day, with temperatures that never drop below 24° and average 32°. The sun is also very strong during this time, which is why it’s always a good idea to carry sunscreen with you, even if you’re not at the beach (a favorite activity for those visiting Zanzibar at this time of year).

If you truly love high temperatures and an intense tropical atmosphere, these three months (December, January, and February) are the best time to fully experience Zanzibar’s equatorial heat.

Water temperature, tides, and other environmental factors

The water temperature mostly reflects the air temperature, as it is decidedly higher and more pleasant in the months from December to March, while it drops during the pyresic period, that is, the months from July to October.

It’s true that Zanzibar is warm year-round, and it’s hard to find water temperatures lower than those of the Mediterranean during the summer months. This makes Zanzibar an ideal beach destination no matter where you go, with waters that are always suitable for swimming.

However, you should pay attention to the winds and tides if you’re planning a trip to Zanzibar: as for the former, it’s certainly of great interest to kitesurfers, since Zanzibar is generally a fairly windy island, with the Kazkazi blowing from the northeast from December through February and the Kuzi, which is more prevalent from July through mid-September. Windsurfing and kitesurfing enthusiasts will find ideal conditions during these windy periods, making these months particularly appealing for fans of these sports.

As for the sea, this phenomenon is particularly common on this island and may be a cause for concern for some, since when it occurs, it tends to alter the landscape and impose restrictions at times when, for example, high tide is at its peak; however, it is not an unavoidable phenomenon. The sea can make it difficult to access certain beaches and snorkeling areas, so it’s a good idea to check in advance.

Many people wonder when the best time is to avoid this phenomenon, but while it is possible to provide precise information on the climate and temperature, the same cannot be said for tides, since they occur (with high and low tides) throughout the year, with cycles influenced by many factors that are not always predictable (for example, the Earth’s orbit and motion, and gravitational pull).

Overall, we can say that the northern area is less affected by this phenomenon than the eastern, western, and southern areas: this is due to the unique topography of the Kendwa and Nungwi beaches, where the coral reef is a bit farther away and the sea seems to be constantly present. So rather than worrying about the time of year, it’s better to know where to go: if you’re not a fan of the ocean, this is the area to choose.
