Let’s see what are some of the best beach resorts in Zanzibar, those where you can also enjoy sports activities such as snorkeling and diving, and how they differ according to the areas in which they are located.

See also our Tanzania + Zamzibar package.

Zanzibar sea: where to find the most beautiful beaches

It is difficult to say which beach is the most beautiful in Zanzibar: in fact, when naming this wonderful and up-and-coming tourist resort in Tanzania, no clear-cut distinctions can be made because each beach, even the seemingly less beautiful ones, surely has something to give not only from an aesthetic point of view but also for the experiences and activities that can be had here.

The main characteristic of every beach in Zanzibar (the one, in short, that unites them all) is the presence of soft white, very fine sand, in which an attempt is made to combine the wild spirit of unspoiled nature with the care that the locals have for these sea areas. This makes us realize that all the beaches of Zanzibar are worthy of attention and that, if there is any difference, it would be mainly in the kind of experiences and activities that can be had.

Another fundamental difference is that which concerns the tides: in fact, this phenomenon is very common precisely in Zanzibar but is localized mainly on the east coast, thus preferring these areas for the activities of the sea, which recedes, at times, effectively making bathing impractical but still giving an extraordinary spectacle.

In any case, on any beach in Zanzibar it is possible to find calm, clear sea with flashy and very eye-catching shades of color.

The most famous and best known beaches for tourists are those of Nungwi and Kendwa: these beach resorts are mostly characterized by narrow beaches, which is why the phenomenon of high tide makes the sea impassable at certain times. Here, however, the sea presents very beautiful colors that push towards a bright blue.

Those looking for a wide beach can instead head for Kiwengwa, where the tourist crowding is even less than at the previous two beaches, and where, however, the tidal phenomenon is definitely more pronounced. Still, the colors of the sea are wonderful and, when the sun is high, the blue/green of the water is matched by a backdrop of very white sand.

Zanzibar sea: snorkeling and diving

Zanzibar is also the perfect place for those who enjoy certain sporting activities such as snorkeling and diving: in fact, there are many tourists who travel to this beautiful location to observe the wonderful seabed, and to be fascinated by all that Mother Nature is able to give to those who know how to appreciate her wonderful gifts.

To make the most of these experiences, it is recommended to take some boat trips that allow you to appreciate the beauty of the seabed up close: the most popular boat trips are Mnemba and Blue Safari. The latter, by the way, is also a popular stop for those who, in addition to observing the beautiful starfish, crabs and marine vegetation, want to have the chance to watch live dolphin acrobatics and, why not, even swim with them.

In short, true lovers of the sea and all those who want to discover the surprises it can hold, cannot fail to appreciate beautiful Zanzibar.

Zanzibar sea: north coast

As we have said, what differentiates the sea and beaches of Zanzibar mainly concerns the tidal phenomenon, which in some coasts is more pronounced and in others a little less: for this reason, it is a good idea for those who do not particularly appreciate the consequences of this phenomenon to inquire about the period when it is most present, so that they can avoid it as much as possible and, vice versa, those who appreciate it will have to prefer the coasts where it occurs more frequently.

In addition to this aspect, one should also note the differences involving the color of the sea and seabed, which in some areas is bluer and in others veers more toward green.

The northwest coast is the one that goes from the beaches of Kendwa to that of west Nungwi, and it is the part that is certainly most appreciated by those who do not like the tidal phenomenon: here, in fact, this phenomenon is much less perceptible and also for this reason the area is very rich in tourists. Among the beaches on this coast we would like to mention, in addition to Kendwa and Nungwi, that of Prison Island, once the base of the coastal slave traders, but today a very important tourist attraction that now attracts many tourists thanks to its unspoiled nature and its great variety of specimens (of birds and turtles, above all).

Southwest coast

Menai Bay is the best known of the resorts on this coast, most famous for the opportunity to observe the many dolphins that inhabit it and who, intrigued and not frightened by tourists, often linger in very playful and curious spectacles.

But there is definitely more, because in this area you can also do some unforgettable diving all along the reef and even spot migrating whales. Of course, it’s not the best beach to stop at, since it’s full of sheer cliffs overhanging the sea here, but it’s still worth a visit, also because of the various conservation centers there.

East Coast

The east coast is the best for those who appreciate the tidal phenomenon, which is really very present here and can give truly unique and breathtaking spectacles.

The main feature of this part of the coast is that there is a coral reef here that forms a long lagoon, which can give beautiful colors, wide and deep beaches full of fine white sand, and many lush palm trees.

Be careful, however, because the difference in height between high and low tide is very pronounced here, such that it can reach up to 4 meters-this is the main reason why villages and hotels in these areas all have at least one swimming pool.

In any case, the beaches are still beautiful and full of opportunities and fun. Think, for example, of Kiwenga, which is characterized by fine white sand: many activities are possible here, whether relaxing (for example, a walk along the coast or a detour to one of the many stalls there) or sporting, such as a water sport.

In addition to it, mention Pongwe and Uroa, which are mostly relaxing beaches where many couples can find serenity and relaxation in a true paradise. Wider and deeper, on the other hand, are Pingue and Dongwe, which have become famous for the well-known seafood restaurant “The Rock” but are nevertheless interesting because they too are touched by the tidal phenomenon. Those who want to observe an example of the typical local culture, on the other hand, must not fail to visit Bewjuu: here women stay waiting for the low tide to have the opportunity to harvest red seaweed, very much in vogue in the food and cosmetic type industry.

On the other hand, those who want to do other sports activities such as kitesurfing, Paje beach is definitely the best, suitable for sportsmen and young people who want to try a new experience.

Clear, warm and crystal-clear waters, beaches with fine white sand dotted with rich palm trees and lush vegetation, wonderful seabed and breathtaking views: this and much more is the beautiful island of Zanzibar, a splendid tourist resort that has long since been considered one of the most beautiful and attractive for tourists from all over […]

[381

post-72993","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-zanzibar
["GET
